Wendigo
Wendigo (tiež známy ako Windigo, Windago, Witiko, Wihtikow a mnoho iných) je mýtická bytosť, ktorá sa objavuje v mytológií severoamerických indiánov. Je to zlovoľný kanibalistický duch, na ktorého sa mohol človek premeniť. Každý, čo sa oddával kanibalizmu bol v riziku a táto legenda oslabila jeho praktizovanie.
Wendigo psychóza-ochorenie, ktoré sa prejavuje intenzívnou chuťou na ľudské mäso, aj keď iné zdroje potravy boli ľahko dostupné (často ako následok predchádzajúceho kanibalizmu počas hladomoru). Často sa prejavovalo medzi pôvodnými obyvateľmi severnej Ameriky aj keď s jej kolonizovaním pomaly mizne.
Wendigo je súčasťou tradičnej viery rôznych indiánskych kmeňov severnej Ameriky. Hoci sa jeho opis trochu líši, jeho ponímanie ako zlovoľná, kanibalistická, nadprirodzená bytosť veľkej duchovnej sily, ktorá je silne spojená s chladom a hladovaním je stále rovnaká.
Niekedy bol opisovaný ako obor, mnohokrát vyšší ako človek. A čím viac ľudí zjedol tým sa zväčší a zväčší sa aj jeho hlad......stále sa napcháva ale stále je hladný.
Všetky kultúry v ktorých sa Wendigo objavil zdieľajú presvedčenie, že človek sa môže premeniť na Wendiga keď sa niekedy uchyľuje ku kanibalizmu, alebo bol posadnutý démonickým duchom Wendiga, často vo sne. Po premene sa osoba stala násilnou a posadnutou pojedaním ľudského mäsa.
Najčastejšou príčinou premeny na Wendiga je ak sa osoba uchýlila ku kanibalizmu počas obdobia extrémneho hladu. Medzi indiánmi bol kanibalizmus, aj keď na záchranu svojho života, považovaný za neprijateľný, správna reakcia na hlad bola samovražda, alebo čakanie na smrť. A to zdôrazňovali obradným tancom počas hladomorov.
Jediný známi spôsob ako zabiť Wndiga je spáliť ho, lebo mu dokáže ublížiť iba oheň.
